It is no exaggeration to say that synthetic biology has penetrated into every aspect of people’s lives. ZymoChem is about to develop a ski jacket made of sugar. Recently, a fashion clothing brand has launched a dress made of CO₂. Fang is LanzaTech, a star synthetic biology company. It is understood that this cooperation is not the first “crossover” of LanzaTech. As early as July this year, LanzaTech cooperated with sportswear company Lululemon and produced the world’s first yarn and fabric that uses recycled carbon emission textiles.
LanzaTech is a synthetic biology technology company located in Illinois, USA. Based on its technical accumulation in synthetic biology, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and engineering, LanzaTech has developed a carbon recovery platform (Pollution To Products™), Production of ethanol and other materials from waste carbon sources.
“By harnessing biology, we can harness the forces of nature to solve a very modern problem. Too much CO₂ in the atmosphere has pushed our planet into a dangerous Opportunity to keep fossil resources in the ground and provide a safe climate and environment for all of humanity,” said Jennifer Holmgren.
LanzaTech used synthetic biology technology to modify a Clostridium from the gut of rabbits to produce ethanol through microorganisms and CO₂ exhaust gas, which was then further processed into polyester fibers, which were finally used to make various nylon fabrics. Remarkably, when these nylon fabrics are discarded, they can be recycled again, fermented and transformed, effectively reducing the carbon footprint.
In essence, LanzaTech’s technical principle is actually the third generation of bio-manufacturing, using microorganisms to convert some waste pollutants into useful fuels and chemicals, such as using CO2 in the atmosphere and renewable energy (light energy, wind energy, Inorganic compounds in wastewater, etc.) for biological production.
With its unique technology that can convert CO₂ into high-value products, LanzaTech has won the favor of investment institutions from many countries. It is reported that LanzaTech’s current financing amount has exceeded US$280 million. Investors include China International Capital Corporation (CICC), China International Investment Corporation (CITIC), Sinopec Capital, Qiming Venture Partners, Petronas, Primetals , Novo Holdings, Khosla Ventures, K1W1, Suncor, etc.
It is worth mentioning that in April this year, Sinopec Group Capital Co., Ltd. invested in Langze Technology to help Sinopec achieve its “double carbon” goal. It is reported that Lanza Technology (Beijing Shougang Lanze New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.) is a joint venture company established by LanzaTech Hong Kong Co., Ltd. and China Shougang Group in 2011. It uses microbial transformation to efficiently capture industrial waste carbon and produce renewable clean Energy, high value-added chemicals, etc.
In May of this year, the world’s first fuel ethanol project using ferroalloy industrial tail gas was established in Ningxia, funded by a joint venture company of Beijing Shougang Langze New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. 5,000 tons of feed can reduce CO₂ emissions by 180,000 tons per year.
As early as 2018, LanzaTech cooperated with Shougang Group Jingtang Iron and Steel Works to establish the world’s first commercial waste gas ethanol plant, using Clostridium to apply steel plant waste gas to commercial synthetic fuels, etc., with an annual output of 46,000 tons of fuel ethanol, protein Feed 5,000 tons, the plant produced more than 30,000 tons of ethanol in its first year of operation, which is equivalent to retaining more than 120,000 tons of CO₂ from the atmosphere.
