According to customs statistics, the import volume of polyethylene in May was 1.0191 million tons, a decrease of 6.79% month on month and 1.54% year-on-year. The cumulative import volume of polyethylene from January to May 2024 was 5.5326 million tons, an increase of 5.44% year-on-year.

In May 2024, the import volume of polyethylene and various varieties showed a downward trend compared to the previous month. Among them, the import volume of LDPE was 211700 tons, a month on month decrease of 8.08% and a year-on-year decrease of 18.23%; The import volume of HDPE was 441000 tons, a month on month decrease of 2.69% and a year-on-year increase of 20.52%; The import volume of LLDPE was 366400 tons, a month on month decrease of 10.61% and a year-on-year decrease of 10.68%. In May, due to the tight capacity of container ports and the increase in shipping costs, the cost of polyethylene imports increased. In addition, some overseas equipment maintenance and import resources tightened, resulting in a shortage of external resources and high prices. Importers lacked enthusiasm for operation, leading to a decrease in polyethylene imports in May.

In May, the United States ranked first among the countries that imported polyethylene, with an import volume of 178900 tons, accounting for 18% of the total import volume; The United Arab Emirates surpassed Saudi Arabia and jumped to second place, with an import volume of 164600 tons, accounting for 16%; The third place is Saudi Arabia, with an import volume of 150900 tons, accounting for 15%. The top four to ten are South Korea, Singapore, Iran, Thailand, Qatar, Russia, and Malaysia. The top ten import source countries in May accounted for 85% of the total import volume of polyethylene, an increase of 8 percentage points compared to the previous month. In addition, compared to April, imports from Malaysia surpassed Canada and entered the top ten. At the same time, the proportion of imports from the United States also decreased. Overall, imports from North America decreased in May, while imports from Southeast Asia increased.

In May, Zhejiang Province still ranked first among the import destinations for polyethylene, with an import volume of 261600 tons, accounting for 26% of the total import volume; Shanghai ranks second with an import volume of 205400 tons, accounting for 20%; The third place is Guangdong Province, with an import volume of 164300 tons, accounting for 16%. The fourth is Shandong Province, with an import volume of 141500 tons, accounting for 14%, while Jiangsu Province has an import volume of 63400 tons, accounting for about 6%. The import volume of Zhejiang Province, Shandong Province, Jiangsu Province, and Guangdong Province has declined month on month, while the import volume of Shanghai has increased month on month.

In May, the proportion of general trade in China's polyethylene import trade was 80%, an increase of 1 percentage point compared to April. The proportion of imported processing trade was 11%, which remained the same as April. The proportion of logistics goods in customs special supervision areas was 8%, a decrease of 1 percentage point compared to April. The proportion of other imported processing trade, import and export of bonded supervision areas, and small-scale border trade was relatively small.
